1.15 billion ISK injection into culture, sports and research
The Ministry of Education and Culture will allocate an additional 750 million ISK to cultural projects and support for sports clubs in the coming weeks, to counteract the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, 400 million ISK will be allocated to research-related projects. In total, this amounts to 1.150 billion ISK, which is in addition to the allocations in the 2020 budget.
"It is important that this funding is put into circulation as soon as possible, so the livelihoods of people and organisations working in these areas are better secured. We aim to create jobs for people who have suffered significant loss of income due to the circumstances, and in the process, create cultural values and knowledge that will be beneficial for the future," says Lilja Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Education and Culture. "This is a substantial injection into this important activity, and the measures taken are more comprehensive than the actions that the governments in Norway and Sweden have taken for the same reason. This is a major milestone in the fight to get society back on track, after the damage caused by COVID-19. We will do what it takes."
