The Laws of the Progressive Party Regarding the Method of Selecting Lists for Parliamentary Elections:

In parliamentary elections, the constituency association must present the list of the Progressive Party in its constituency. However, if a constituency association operates in Reykjavik, it is permitted to present the list of the Progressive Party on its own behalf in both the North and South Reykjavik constituencies. The constituency assembly determines the method of selection and finalises the candidate list. Rules regarding nominations must be established at least 6 months prior to regular parliamentary elections. The methods for selecting candidates may be of five types: i) electronic voting; ii) closed primary; iii) double constituency assembly; iv) nomination; v) open primary, cf. clause 5.1 of the laws of the Progressive Party.

At the Party Congress of the Progressives in 2011, various amendments were made to the party's laws. Among other things, a specific section on nominations was approved in order to create clearer parameters for candidacy and ensure consistency between constituencies. The laws of the Progressive Party therefore clearly define the methods for selecting lists, as well as provisions regarding deadlines and dates concerning eligibility and voting rights. The nomination methods were developed in close cooperation and collaboration with numerous party members.

The nomination rules ensure that:

  • there are equal opportunities for everyone to stand for election

  • members have realistic opportunities to influence

  • only those who should have an influence have it

  • there is consensus on the process and expected results

  • there is consistency between the selection of candidates and the general policy direction of the party
