Ólafur Jóhannesson was born in Stórholt in Fljótum on 1 March 1913, and died on 20 May 1984. He was married to Dóra Guðrún Magdalena Ásta Guðbjartsdóttir, who passed away on 3 September 2004. They had three children, Kristrún (1942), Guðbjart (1947, deceased), and Dóra (1951). Ólafur graduated from MA in 1935. Law degree from the University of Iceland in 1939. He became a Supreme Court lawyer in 1942. He studied further in Stockholm and Copenhagen in 1945—1946. He worked as a lawyer and auditor and became a professor at the Faculty of Law and Business, later the Faculty of Law, University of Iceland 1947—1978. He often served as a reserve judge in the Supreme Court 1949—1971. Appointed Prime Minister and Minister of Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs on 14 July 1971. Appointed Minister of Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs and Trade, 28 August 1974. Appointed Prime Minister, 1 September 1978. Appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, 8 February 1980. Ólafur was a Member of Parliament for Skagafjörður 1959, Member of Parliament for North Iceland West 1959—1979, and Member of Parliament for Reykjavík 1979—1984. Ólafur was widely involved in his career and was entrusted with responsible positions both within and outside Framsóknarflokkurinn. In addition, he composed textbooks and scholarly books on law and numerous articles of the same subject published in Icelandic and foreign journals besides writings on social issues. The Ólafur Book, an anniversary edition, was published in 1983.
