"30% of the citizens do not have the means to pay off their debts"
Hjálmar Bogi Hafliðason, deputy MP, spoke in Parliament yesterday about the tendency of all systems to maintain themselves. „Equilibrium is created, and systems do not need to cope with changes. But the system that we humans created in a few years and live with has led to enormous inequality, wealth distribution issues, and waste,“ said Hjálmar Bogi.
When the richest 10% of Icelanders own 73% of the country's wealth, then 30% of the population cannot pay their debts. „Can such inequality persist,“ said Hjálmar Bogi.
„The Prime Minister's words about the scope for raising the lowest wages thus brought a certain satisfaction to me, and also that in the upcoming collective agreements, there will be consideration to raise wages in krónur and not percentages. That alone would be a small systemic change in the right direction against the built-in inequality in the system,“ said Hjálmar Bogi.
