30 minutes a day amounts to 13.7 million words

"It is a fact that if a child reads nothing over the summer, it can result in a regression of up to three months in their reading skills during the break. The positive aspect is that it does not take much for children to maintain their skills or to make progress." This is stated by Lilja Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Education and Culture, in an article in Morgunblaðið this week.

"According to a British reading study, pleasurable reading is crucial when it comes to children's vocabulary, and vocabulary is a fundamental component of reading comprehension and thus all other learning. The research revealed that if a child reads for 15 minutes a day throughout their primary school years, they will be exposed to 1.5 million words. If the child, however, reads for about 30 minutes a day, they will be exposed to 13.7 million words. This exponential growth provides clear indications of how important pleasurable reading is for student success," says Lilja.
