Responsible, radical and progressive policies for the future
The appeal of urban centres and capitals is known worldwide. Our projects in rural areas aim to counteract the migration to the capital by securing the operational environment of traditional sectors for the future, as well as creating conditions that aim to increase the attractiveness of rural areas as a good option for individuals and companies to settle. An increasing number of families consider Borgarbyggð a good living choice, work in the capital region, and commute daily. Borgarbyggð has become part of the capital's employment area, and it is necessary for us to seize the opportunities that accompany this.
In the municipality's financial statements for recent years, it appears that contributions from the Municipal Equalisation Fund are hundreds of millions more than anticipated, which is a sign of increased economic growth and a good recovery in economic affairs. National debt has decreased, and economic conditions have been favourable. Nationally, we see that foundational industries are increasing with more diversity in the labour market. The opportunities in food production in our country for the future are vast due to our unique position. And expectations can indeed be set for the tourism industry to ensure year-round residency and contribute to increasing the population. Growth in tourism has been significant in recent years, and it is believed that about 50% of the economic growth increase can be attributed to tourism, bringing various benefits but also challenges. The conditions for utilising these opportunities are good cooperation between the state and municipalities. It benefits us that the current government has the understanding, knowledge, and interest in rural industries. It is a collaborative project of these entities to make strides in securing the lifelines of the industry, which are transport and telecommunications. The priority in contemporary regional policy must be a more efficient development of three-phase electricity and the maintenance and growth of road connections in rural areas. This is a fundamental aspect to support the growth and prosperity of employment and residency.
Our task as a municipality is not to become stuck in the past and fear the changes and challenges that the future brings. We need an ambitious education policy from preschool to upper secondary school that takes into account the developments taking place, with an emphasis on harnessing ingenuity and creativity and enhancing technical and scientific subjects. We need to assess what has been successful and where improvements can be made. Let us be responsible with a clear vision and unafraid to be radical.
With progressive strategy formation, we as a municipality can be at the forefront.
