To have faith in the community
We in the municipality of Norðurþing face significant challenges. The operational shutdown of PCC Bakki Silicon has profound effects on our community – on the economy, the municipality's revenue, and people's faith in the future. Now we need optimism, resilience, and actions that create the future. But let us not sugarcoat the situation. Around 200-250 jobs are lost directly and indirectly. This is akin to 4,000 individuals in Reykjavik. The municipality's revenues will decrease by nearly 900 million krónur a year, of which the Harbour Fund's revenue will be about 70% or 300-350 million. Such a drop in revenue has an impact. Yet we stand upright, take the hit, and respond with solutions, not surrender.
Optimism and Energy
The community has gone through crises and changes and has rebuilt. We have the foundation and infrastructure, the strength and experience. We own the future if we seize the opportunities that now lie ahead. At Bakki, there is one of the best-located and equipped industrial areas in Iceland. Energy. Hot water. Harbour. And opportunities to expand for more diverse operations. This is confirmed by a recently released government report. Furthermore, we have educated people and strong community awareness. Yes, this will test our unity, our will, and our perseverance. The opportunity for new job creation is now. We intend to be at the forefront of this work. Optimistic. We intend to make progress. Industry, energy technology, utilisation of transport infrastructure such as the harbour, and then an airport for new operations that will create revenue for the national economy. To ensure that every króna spent on the development benefits the area. Therefore, we have faith in our community and the big picture. Alongside this, we need to support existing businesses and welcome companies, entrepreneurs, and new people to the project. To be part of the future in our municipality. When we stand together, no mountain will be too high or challenge too great.
Driving Force for Progress
The municipal council will use the coming months to pressure the government and all stakeholders for investments and support for new projects, ensure continued operations and revenue security, and attract new companies to Bakki and elsewhere in the municipality. We will inform residents and work together for the future. For the future of the municipality is not based on what we have lost but on what we intend to build together. Optimism and positivity are the driving forces for progress. Let us have faith in our community; the crisis will become an opportunity for us who live here. We will continue to build.
